Welcome Rituals ✈️🥥

Just landed in Sri Lanka? Here’s what you need to do before you chase coconuts and sunsets.

Welcome to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake — the main international airport in Sri Lanka. If you're anything like me, you're probably excited, a little disoriented, and maybe already craving rice and curry. But before you dash out of the airport, there are a few things you really should sort out first.

📶 Get a Local SIM Card

Trust me on this  - having mobile data from the start is a game-changer. You’ll need it for Google Maps, translations, booking rides, and all sorts of little things that make travel way easier.

As soon as you walk out of arrivals, you’ll spot a few mobile network booths. Setting up a SIM card takes less than 10 minutes, and the staff are super helpful.

Here are your options:

Here are your options:

  • Dialog – The best by far. Reliable signal across the country (even in remote spots), affordable tourist plans, and great customer service.

  • Mobitel – A solid second choice with decent urban coverage.

  • Airtel – Budget-friendly, but signal drops outside big towns.

  • Hutch – Fine for city use, but not great for traveling around.

👉 Pro tip: Go with Dialog and don’t look back. You’ll thank yourself later when you're still getting bars up in the misty mountains.

📱 Apps You Should Definitely Download First

1. Booking.com

If you don’t already have it, now’s the time. Great for last-minute hotel deals, guesthouses, homestays, and finding places with solid reviews. Super handy when you're moving from place to place and want something trusted.

2. PickMe

Sri Lanka’s local ride app — and a total lifesaver. You can book tuk-tuks, cars, or even bikes with riders (perfect for solo travelers on a budget). They’ve also got food delivery when you're too tired to step out.

Basically it  is like a UBER in Sri Lanka. you can just set a your location and location where you need. then you can select the vehicle  ( Motor Bike , TukTuk , Car, or Van ) then search for drivers nearby. once they accepted the ride they will come to you and pick you. also that app have option to order foods and send parcells as well.

3. Uber

Yep, Uber works here too! Especially in Colombo and a few other big towns. It’s good to compare with PickMe and grab the better deal.

4. XE Currency

Want to avoid getting ripped off or confused by all those zeroes in rupees? This app gives you quick, real-time currency conversion so you always know what you’re spending.
