Are You Considering Traveling to Kandy (Nuwara)? Before you leave, read this!

You intend to travel to Kandy (Nuwara) prior to the 26th, then? For a moment, you might want to reconsider that. Even though Kandy is always a beautiful destination to visit, the current situation is very different.

The Sacred Tooth Relic is being displayed to the public for the first time in sixteen years, which explains why. For Sri Lankans and Buddhists worldwide, this is a huge occasion, and as you can imagine, crowds of people are traveling to Kandy.
The crowds are enormous, and the normally serene mood of the city? It is no longer there.

It can feel like a game of bumper cars to navigate the congested lanes leading into Kandy. There will inevitably be traffic congestion, and you may end up sitting still for a long time. It can be very difficult to find parking and navigate the area surrounding the Temple of the Tooth.

It's not only the roads, either. Hotels are filling up fast, and because of the tremendous demand, the few remaining rooms will probably be costly. You might be in some trouble if you don't already have your lodging arranged.

If you're here to see the Tooth Relic, then congratulations! You're going to see something very unique. Being a part of something so significant and historic is a genuinely unique experience. However, be prepared for the queues, the crowds, and the general chaos that accompany it.

However, it's definitely best to wait until after the 26th if all you want is a quiet getaway or if you intend to take in Kandy's typical beauty. Believe me, there will be less traffic and the city will return to its tranquil state. Without having to push your way through a sea of people, you'll be able to take in the sights, such as the Botanical Gardens and the breathtaking vistas of the hills.

So, if you can, plan your visit after the 26th. Kandy’s magic is best enjoyed when it’s not overcrowded.

Safe travels!
